Operation "New Kitchen": Appliances

Firstly, I am STUNNED and amazed that a single, skinny guy in his (probably) 50's was able to get all these appliances in the house and kitchen ALONE! Apparently he's been doing this for a couple of decades.

Thankfully the hubby got home just as the new fridge was being brought in to the house so they could "man-speak" their way through the issue of getting it through the small gap. WOW! Erm, did I say WOW?

I have a headache just listening to them.

BUT, we now have appliances. The fridge is fully installed and cooling down nicely. The range is functional but won't be fully installed until the countertops arrive, but the microwave is awesome. Dishwasher won't get hooked up until the sink gets installed with the countertops and all the plumbing can happen at the same time.

I've added a bunch of new photo's to the album...

Operation "New Kitchen": Weekend Blast

It's been a whirlwind weekend but we finally have our house back, well mostly anyway since we don't have countertops or appliances yet.

We had intended to go to Vinland Raids (Cape Cod) this weekend but by the end of Friday night we were exhausted and so decided to make the decision and bail. We would have liked to go but the thought of a 10 hour round trip was a little more than we could bear after this past week.

Friday night we finished installing the cabinets, ripping out and painting the pantry, installing the all important electrical boxes and lighting, and setting up a temporary sink. The best part though was being able to get some of our crap back into its new home(s). We seem to have a ton more cupboard space now which is brilliant.

Saturday we slept later than intended, but ended up at Lowes to buy various little bits we needed. The two big jobs for Saturday were the installation of the real copper backsplash and the rebuilding of the pantry, including roll-out shelves. The backsplash looks phenominal against the dark cabinets and we haven't even taken the protective plastic coating off it yet, that'll happen after the counteryops go in.

Operation "New Kitchen": Hanging Strong

On a much lighter note, the wall cabinets went up last night. Hubby spent the first part of the evening laying out and measuring which cabinets go where, after that the wall cabinets went up fast. He needs to make an adjustment here and there but I can start cleaning them and loading them up when I get home tonight =)

We also bought the base cabinets in to the kitchen last night, the HUGE corner lazy-susan was particularly entertaining. I could barely lift the stupid thing, until that is we'd struggled most of the way down the hallway where I found that the base of the cabinet actually had hand-holds built in. Hubby wasn't amused. >.>

Tonight will be finishing off with the base cabinets, installing the under cabinet lighting and most importantly loading the cupboards up with all the crap that's dotted around the rest of the ground floor. We're both starting to feel VERY overwhelmed with how messy our house is right now, we're not used to having this much crap everywhere. It looks like we're hoarders =(

Operation "New Kitchen": Fancy Treads

Cabinets were delivered yesterday and I had the guy play garage tetras with them. They all fit though and are now stacked nicely awaiting installation.

Last night was devoted to laying the floor. When we moved in, back in 2004, we bought a Pergo floor for the entire ground floor, even the kitchen. We laid the flooring throughout the rest of the ground floor but the packets of boards for the kitchen have been upstairs in the attic gathering dust ever since then.

Having the flooring in has started to tone down the minty-fresh green on the walls which I'm happy to see. There are a few spots that need a little touching up but that can wait until the cabinets are in.

I got up this morning, bleary-eyed, craving granola and coffee (both of which I had to wait until I got to work for) to find the hubby marking out stud lines and measuring out cabinet placement. He was also tormenting the poor cat with the laser-level >.>

Hubby's back was starting to get a bit "GRRRRRRR" last night, so hopefully it'll calm down again and we can hang at least the wall cabinets tonight. I have to admit that I've gotten to the point where I'm feeling very claustrophobic at home because there is so much displaced crap everywhere, it all just seems so very dirty and grimy.

And if you're interested in seeing the photograph's of our progress...

Operation "New Kitchen": EEWWWWWWWWW

Major demolition happened last night, we ripped out EVERYTHING.

All the old crappy cupboards are gone, as is the disgusting "dishwasher" that we've never used and the aweful stove. It was a pretty nasty process though as we unhooked the water supply from the sink and dishwasher, "old" water running out and the smell of the sewer coming up through the drain-pipe. I am also HORRIFIED to share that there was lots of grime and dead bug carcasses under the cupboards. Needless to say, its all now gone, and we have a clean fresh-slate.

After we got done with demolition and cleaning, it was time for me to paint. Ceiling got a fresh lick of paint, white with a creamy yellow undertone, to cover up the accumulated grime. I'd just like to point out now that popcorn ceilings are AWFUL. The walls are now green. The wet paint looks very "minty" in colour but it dries darker, so unfortunately it looks a little sickly at the moment because there are not other colours in the room to balance it. Once the brown-tones of the cupboards and floor are in then it'll look a lot better, then even better once the cream coloured counter-top's and copper back-splash get added.

I finished up about 11pm covered in paint. Tonight, cabinets get delivered after yesterdays debacle and the floor gets installed.

PS: I have been taking progress photo's which I hope to start posting tonight, just need to upload them.

Operation "New Kitchen"

And we're off! Operation "New Kitchen" is underway!

We spent the better part of Sunday clearing out the kitchen, transferring pots, pans, food and various other crap into storage boxes making the house a MESS! There is stuff EVERYWHERE. We set up the camp kitchen on the deck for cooking purposes, it amazes me how useful most off our SCA related stuff is mundanely.

Hubby went to town ripping out the AWEFUL 20-year old pressboard cabinets and disassembling stuff. Go to Thesaurus.com and type in "disgusting" to get my feelings on the subject.

Apparently the plumber-friend came this morning to shut some stuff off.

The cabinet delivery people SUCK. So much for the 8 - 9am delivery window. Hubby is P.I.S.S.E.D. since he stayed home from work to take delivery. They didn't even call him to say they would be delayed until much later, and this coming from a company that wants him to use them for the next apartment project he builds...

Tonight, I paint.
