So this past weekend was an SCA event called "War of the Roses", its considered the first big camping event of the season for the people here in this area. We've been looking forward to it for a while now for a few different reasons.
War of the Roses is our anniversary for joining the SCA. It was one year ago this past weekend that we got involved and started wearing funny clothes. Much has changed in this past year and where we were feeling VERY overwhelmed last year and not really being able to participate, this year was the complete opposite. We've both become very active and functional members of our Barony and are making names for ourselves in our respective fields of interests. We've made our own garb, bought and made our own martial equipment, have a suitably rustic encampment including our own canvas tent and most importantly made some awesome friends.
This event is also where the Baronial Heavy Weapons and Baronial Fencing champions are decided. I did quite well in the fencing tournament where I managed to reach the semi-finals before being eliminated by Don Thomas del Brooke who eventually went on to win the tournament, amazingly his first ever. Although he doesn't actually reside in Concordia, we are his Barony away from home and he will be a wonderful champion for us.
DH held his own in the heavy weapons tournament and unsurprisingly came up against Deacon de Chatillion in the finals. On Baron Angus' whim, they were made to compete for the title by gaining 10 head shots, and ONLY head shots, to win the tournament. After beating each other over the head for 30 minutes, DH eventually came out victorious to become the new Baronial Heavy Weapons champion. I ran of quickly to pee!
The most special part of the weekend though was a scheme that has been in the making for months. It involved 600+ emails for planning, a lot of deception and even a Royal decree! Back in January I was asked to produce a backlog Silver Crescent scroll for Lylie of Penhyll. It was to be the opening to a much larger scheme that would eventually end with Lylie becoming a Pelican.
The day started innocently enough with us all involved in our individual activities, making it look like any other event. At some point Lylie unknowingly headed over to His Majesty and offered herself as his minion for the day as that is just what she does, this eventually played in perfectly. Not long after the herald called for Lylie to present herself to the King. He extolled her virtues and made a few jokes about how long she had waited for her Silver Crescent scroll, a few chuckles here and there. Then she was presented with her scroll which I had the great honor of working on for her.
But wait there's more!
His Majesty then called forth the Order of the Pelican and the game was up. Now everyone knew that there was more to this story and that the deception which had been months in the making had worked.
Lylie spent the reset of the day in a white canvas tent meeting with the people that came to visit, they offered words of encouragement, advice and lots of hugs.
