This was a weekend for working in my garden. As I’ve said before, there’s nothing like mindlessly digging through the dirt with your bare hands.
Its no where near the last frost date for this area but there is lots that needs to be done. My main priority was getting my vegetable seedlings re-potted and outside so that they can start to “harden off.” This weekend was perfect for that as it was sunny and very hot with warm nights. They seem to be doing well, growing up nice and strong so that they can feed us copious amounts of fruit later in the year. They get the cold-frame (basically a plastic tent) put over them at night to keep the frost off them, the gravel floor helps trap the warmth of the day too.
I did also sow a few other things. Kentucky Blue Pole Beans which I think the squirrels will destroy before they germinate and a bunch of herbs (Lemon Grass, Lemon Balm, Sweet Basil, Spearmint). I’m trying to think of more things I can grow in pots…..
There were other plants that got re-potted between bouts of lazing in the hammock or hiding from the heat of the sun. My Hosta’s seem to be doing well and coming on strong, as does the Lilac, Honeysuckle and Japanese Maple that are new this year. Now all I need is for more to start blooming! I really must get more late winter/early spring bloomers in for next year.
I really happy that my Garden is turning into the little oasis I always envisioned.
